Tickets and Accidents on Your Record? How to Still Find Affordable Coverage in McDonough & Stockbridge

Tickets and accidents can raise your rate, but they don't make you uninsurable. Plenty of drivers in McDonough and Stockbridge have a speeding ticket, a fender bender, or even an SR-22 requirement, and still find affordable car insurance. The trick is matching your record with the right company.

How violations affect your insurance

Insurance companies look at your motor vehicle report (MVR), which lists tickets, accidents, and license actions. In general:

  • Minor violations (like low-level speeding) usually affect rates for about 3 years.
  • At-fault accidents typically count for 3 to 5 years, depending on the company.
  • Major violations (DUI, reckless driving, driving on a suspended license) can affect rates for 5 years or more, and may require an SR-22.

Each company has its own rules. One insurer might add a large surcharge for a single ticket, while another barely changes the price. That's why shopping around matters so much for drivers with violations.

Georgia's point system, briefly

Georgia assigns points for moving violations. For example, speeding 15 to 18 mph over the limit is 2 points, and 19 to 23 mph over is 3 points. If you get 15 or more points in 24 months, your license can be suspended. Points and insurance surcharges are separate systems, but both start with the same tickets.

Some Georgia drivers can reduce points once every five years by completing an approved defensive driving course. Ask your agent whether that might help with any of your insurance discounts too.

What is an SR-22?

An SR-22 isn't insurance itself. It's a certificate your insurance company files with the state to prove you carry at least the minimum required coverage. In Georgia it's often required after a DUI, driving uninsured, or certain license suspensions.

Not every insurance company files SR-22s. If you need one, look for an agency that works with SR-22 drivers regularly. They can usually file it with your policy and explain how long you'll need to maintain it.

How to find affordable coverage with a less-than-perfect record

  • Shop multiple companies. This is the most important step. The difference between carriers can be significant for drivers with violations.
  • Be completely honest. Insurers will pull your MVR anyway. Disclosing everything up front prevents surprise price changes later.
  • Raise your deductible if you can comfortably afford it.
  • Look at your vehicle. Insuring a modest, safe car usually costs less than insuring a high-powered or luxury vehicle.
  • Bundle auto with home or renters coverage when possible.
  • Ask about defensive driving courses and other available discounts.
  • Keep your coverage continuous. A lapse on top of violations makes things harder.
  • Re-shop when violations age off. As tickets and accidents fall outside the lookback window, your options should improve.

What not to do

  • Don't let your policy lapse to "save money." It almost always costs more later.
  • Don't leave a household driver off your application to lower the price. That can lead to a denied claim.
  • Don't assume the first quote is the only quote.

The bottom line

A ticket or accident is a speed bump, not a dead end. Drivers in McDonough, Stockbridge, and the rest of Henry County with violations, at-fault accidents, or SR-22 needs can still find affordable coverage when they work with an agency that shops multiple insurance companies and treats them with respect.
